So, if we use a given address with a higher Subnet Mask value like given in the second example, we will have more networks. In other words, we can divide the network into smaller pieces. So, we will not waste the IP Addresses. Smaller networks that has few hosts do not need more addresses. With Subnetting, using a small network with few host addresses is a way of best practice of a network engineer.

Therefore, subnetting practice is very much required when preparing for the CCNA exam. To clear the exam, passing marks of 825 out of 1000 are needed which becomes even more difficult to score when we have a stringent time limit that we are given. So, you need to have a thorough understanding of subnetting to finish your exam in time. Hence, I advice you to prepare well for this topic because it is the most time consuming part of the exam especially if you are slow at calculations.


I'm having a difficult time trying to find any information on subnetting a v6 address into smaller subnets. A coworker is studying for an MS exam and they had a question on there that frankly makes no sense. The subnet calculators that I'm using doesn't give the same answer either. I'm going to put the question and answer in here, but I'd like to know how to subnet this out manually if possible:

Subnetting is the practice of dividing a network into two or more smaller networks. It increases routing efficiency, enhances the security of the network and reduces the size of the broadcast domain.


The Class A networking address scheme is designed for the government and large institutions needing a great deal of unique nodes. Although the Class A network has only 254 unique network addresses, it can contain approximately 17 million unique nodes, which can make subnetting such a network a nightmare.


Getting up to speed with subnetting Class A addresses requires a little forethought, some basic information, and a lot of practice. Here, I will explain Class A subnet masks and how to assign valid subnets and host addresses to provide flexibility in configuring your network.


Practice Class A mask 255.255.128.0This mask provides you with nine bits of subnetting and 15 host bits (/17). This gives you 512 subnets with 32,766 hosts each. The second octet is 256-255=1, 2, 3, etc., all the way to 255. Zero is available in the second octet if you have either a subnet bit on in the third octet or are, of course, using subnet zero.


This post lists three practice problems. Each problem lists a set of subnet/mask pair for existing routes in some router. Your job: choose the subnet/mask pair to use as the best summary route that includes the addresses in all the routes in the original list. Unsure as to what that means? My understanding of this now is that keeping wired and wireless on different subnets is a best practice, but the impact if they are isn't significant, depending on the amount of clients and subnet size? Basically the same as any large subent with a large client base.
